On Great Pyrenees
The dog and the mountains!

I recently became aware that one of my newest followers on Facebook is a Great Pyrenees dog named Tubbs Dewclaw. I welcome Tubbs to my site-after all I have a cat that follows me too. And the Great Pyrenees breed gets along well with cats, so Giuseppe Gattino shouldn't mind at all. What Giuseppe knows, but Tubbs doesn't, is that I have a fondness for Pyrenees breed. The great Pyrenees dog is one of the most handsome breeds (IMHO)-and I have had the honor to spend time with these dogs in their natural habitat! Heather and I spent five seasons as hiking guides in the Pyrenees of France and Spain. And while this dog is not as common there as you'd expect, you can always count on one working the fields or lounging in town (usually the latter-after all this is France!). The French love their chiens and the Great Pyrenees are well loved too-and they get to work (like we did) in one of the prettiest mountain ranges on the planet. Now while the Great Pyrenees dog is not as common in the mountains of France and Spain like he used to be-his cousin the Abruzzese shepherd is quite common in his native Italian Apennines. I met many of these fine dogs while hiking in another one of my favorite places on the planet, Abruzzo National Park. So, if there are any Great Pyrenees and Abruzzese shepherd fans out there, chime in! And Tubbs, you too feel free to bark in-and I hope you turn out to be a great therapy dog.

Trailcasts are back!

Click on over to Green Trails.com and download a Trailcast or two. What's a trailcast? It's a pod cast of a selected hike from one of my many guidebooks. And once you get it downloaded into your preferred listening device-its like taking me and Marc the Cartographer along as your guides. Heck-we'll even bring along Bodhi the wonder dog on occasion. So check it out and let us take you for a hike. You'll have to pack your own lunch though. We haven't figured out yet how to get some grub over to you via the web!

Not Impressed!

While Giuseppe may not be impressed with my Best Hikes with Dogs Inland Northwest Book, you may be. Now, while definitely catered to hikers of the canine persuasion, dog-less hikers will find much to their liking in this book too. For one thing, this guidebook is the most comprehensive of any on the Kettle River Range in Northeastern Washington. You'll also find some great hikes in the Selkirks, Palouse, Tiffany Highlands, Idaho Panhandle, Cabinet Mountains of Montana and the Bitterroot Divide of Idaho and Montana.

And if you live in Spokane come see my slide show and book talk on hiking with your dog at REI on Monday October 20th. Come back on Tuesday October 21 and see my talk and presentation on hiking in the Kettle River Range and other wild areas of Northeastern Washington. I think Giuseppe is going to pass on those events. He wants to know when I'm going to give a talk on the Missing Lynx, Catamount Trail, and Kendall Catwalk instead.
