Does a bear ....?

Judging from this photo-the answer is a resounding "Yup!"
This bruin butt blast was deposited on the Baker River Trail. Lot's of bear activity along the trail this spring, especially since two legged visitors aren't out in substantial numbers. The road leading to the trail washed out last November (along with half the trails and Forest roads in Western Washington). Good news, though-the washout is easy to get around. From there it is a 3 mile trek on the road to the trailhead; an easy bike ride. The trail itself received some damage but not enough to hinder travel. Enjoy this trail now-along with the adjacent Baker Lake Trail to experience these popular paths in peace, And perhaps you may even witness the pooping bear!

Happy Memorial Day
While most Americans will be out boating, barbecuing, biking, hiking, and enjoying being with friends and family this Memorial Day weekend, let's not forget to honor our war dead. We are free to enjoy these pursuits because of the sacrifices of so many of our servicemen and women. And while you're enjoying this long holiday weekend remember that we have thousands of troops currently in Iraq and Afghanistan serving our country. Have a great Memorial Day-remember our war dead-and support our troops.

Twenty-six point two and a twenty-five ounce brew!
What's the best thing about doing a marathon? Finishing-and replenishing thy aching body with a burger and beer. I just recently completed my 7th marathon by partaking in the inaugural Eugene Marathon. What a race! It was my slowest marathon-but not because of the course. The course is fast. I'm not. I still ran under 4 hours but boy do I need to lay off the beer and burgers and put some more training in. Eugene (except for the 60s throwbacks-c'mon guys put down the drums and get a job-you're 50 now!) is a great little city and of course a community that has running in its soul. I'll be doing a few stories on Eugene and its marathon in an upcoming issue of Northwest Runner. Meanwhile-I think I'll have another beer-I mean run a few more miles.
